African Art History and Visual Culture --
Assistant Professor
DUTIES: The Department of Art & Art History and the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities (RCAH) at Michigan State University invite applications for a tenure-system position in African Art and Visual Culture to begin August 16, 2008.
Teaching responsibilities will be shared between these units, and include courses in art history and visual culture and interdisciplinary undergraduate courses with a transcultural focus. As part of the assignment in the Department of Art and Art History, the faculty member will be expected to contribute to the department’s and college’s general education programs. Opportunities exist to work in other interdisciplinary settings focused on global studies (African Studies Center, African and African-American Studies Program, Global Literary and Cultural Studies program), in the Museum Studies Program, and on curatorial projects at the MSU Museum and the Art Museum (the future Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum opening Fall 2010; visit http://artmuseum.msu.edu).
QUALIFICATIONS: PhD in African Art History required. Other qualifications include the ability to develop and teach courses and workshops on contemporary African visual culture issues; evidence of a commitment to undergraduate teaching; a commitment to developing a transcultural curriculum; an interest in engaged learning and in the development of study abroad or study away programs; and evidence of scholarly achievement as well as promise of continuing research activities.

The Residential College in the Arts and Humanities (RCAH) is a four-year degree-granting program with a structured curriculum that emphasizes transcultural history, literature, visual and performing arts, composition, language immersion, civic engagement, and social justice. The RCAH welcomed its inaugural class in fall 2007.
The Department of Art and Art History is dedicated to the creation and historical study of the visual arts through undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The department is part of the College of Arts and Letters and offers study in Studio Art, Art Education, and History of Art and Visual Culture.
