Global Studies in Arts and Humanities -- Director

DESCRIPTION: The College of Arts and Letters at Michigan State University seeks a tenure-system senior scholar, Professor or Associate Professor, to serve as the founding director of a program in Global Studies in the Arts and Humanities beginning August 16, 2008.  Global Studies focuses on intersecting languages, literatures, and arts and on theoretical considerations of values, meanings, identities, and power within and across social time and space within a world of increasing integration and fragmentation. 

The successful applicant will have strong commitments to interdisciplinary and cross-language research and teaching. We seek a dynamic leader who will work with our faculty to develop a new major, promote fruitful connections with our general education Integrative Studies program, and foster collaborative research. The new director will hold a tenured position within one of the disciplinary units of the College and is expected to contribute to graduate as well as undergraduate education.

Global Studies in the Arts and Humanities at Michigan State University will figure within an existing network of interdisciplinary and international programs. These include concentrated work in area studies, environmental studies, gender studies, African American and African Studies and several interdisciplinary programs in which the College of Arts and Letters plays a prominent role. Michigan State University is in a process or redefining in global terms its historical role as a land-grant institution, and intends that the arts and humanities play a prominent role in its mission as an engaged university.

QUALIFICATIONS:  PhD or equivalent.  Candidates should have a significant record of research in literatures, languages, cultural and media studies, art history, or philosophy.
