Position Description:
Hindi Language and South Asian Literature and Culture -- Assistant Professor

DUTIES:  The College of Arts and Letters at Michigan State University invites applications for a tenure-system appointment at the assistant professor level with demonstrated expertise in Hindi language and South Asian literature and culture beginning August 16, 2008. 

The ideal candidate will be an engaged scholar and experienced teacher who will work collaboratively with affiliated colleagues and the South Asian community to cultivate a strong program in South Asian studies. Besides teaching Hindi language courses, the successful candidate will be responsible for developing and teaching courses in South Asian literature and culture for the Center for Integrative Studies and will also contribute to the College’s programmatic emphasis on global studies, including the development of an undergraduate major in Global Studies in the Arts and Humanities.  In addition, the individual appointed will be expected to work with the Asian Studies Center in furthering on and off campus activities promoting understanding of South Asia Language and culture.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates will be considered from a range of disciplines including but not limited to literature, film, performing arts, cultural studies, linguistics, and second language acquisition.  Those with research interests in globalization, diaspora studies, migration studies (e.g. Partition literature), multiculturalism and hybridity, women’s studies, social justice (e.g. Dalit literature), nationalism, or postcolonialism are especially encouraged to apply. A PhD in hand, native or near-native fluency in English and Hindi, and college-level teaching experience required. Proficiency in another South Asian language such as Urdu, Bengali, Braj Bhasha, or Sanskrit is highly desirable.
