College Faculty Awards

In a university environment the importance of faculty leadership is vital. Faculty leaders have a transforming impact on programs and departments and often account for the difference between a good program and an excellent program. Faculty members in the College of Arts & Letters (CAL) in particular are an essential resource in all that we do and the College is well served when they take ownership of curricular decisions and look beyond their own courses with an eye toward positively affecting the curriculum as a whole, as well as producing quality work that makes a significant difference in what we do for our students.

Toward an Open Monograph Ecosystem Award

The Toward an Open Monograph Ecosystem Award (TOME) provides $15,000 to be used as a subvention in support of the publication of an open-access digital monograph of up to 90,000 words. Monographs must have been accepted for publication by a participating university press. Eligible monographs must be authored or co-authored by a member of the MSU faculty. Generally, critical editions, edited collections, creative works, textbooks, and translations will not be eligible for the award.

Faculty Leadership Award

The College of Arts & Letters 2019 Faculty Leadership Award is funded through an endowment created by former CAL Dean Karin Wurst and the Associate Deans. It is designed to reward faculty who demonstrate outstanding leadership and seeks to recognize, honor, and reward the kind of faculty leaders who go beyond the performance of routine tasks, are generous in sharing insights, and provide the hard work and mentoring that creates vision and excellence in programs and departments.

Fixed-Term Faculty/Academic Specialist Leadership Excellence Award

This award recognizes and rewards fixed-term faculty and academic specialists in the College of Arts & Letters at Michigan State University who demonstrate leadership excellence. Leadership excellence is exhibited by those who through the performance of their assigned duties enhance the programmatic excellence of their college unit as a whole. These fixed-term faculty and academic specialists make a substantive impact in their area and often mark the difference between a good program and an excellent one. Award winners provide the hard work and leadership that fosters excellence, encourages others on their own path to intellectual leadership, and enhances diversity across the College of Arts & Letters.

CAL Community Partner Award (Faculty Nomination)

The College of Arts & Letters Community Partner Award (Faculty) recognizes a CAL faculty member’s community contributions at the local, state, national and or global/world levels. It recognizes participation, student mentorship and overall leadership, as well as significant involvement as is reflected in one or more community engagement activities. This award is linked to our mission to “enrich community, economic and family life”. A letter of nomination should be submitted by an individual with knowledge of the faculty member’s distinguished contributions in the area of community engagement. This nomination should describe the faculty member’s activity or activities in which he/she is involved, the nature of the involvement, the level of mentorship and overall leadership as well as the impact the faculty member is making through his/her role within the community as a whole. Nominator can include, but are not limited to: fellow faculty member, department chair, student, community partner, or service learning partner. Applications are due February 25 to CAL Advancement Office.

Paul Varg Alumni Award for Faculty

Recognizes an Arts & Letters faculty member who has challenged students intellectually, maintained a national reputation in their field, provided service to the college, university and community, and is the consummate professional. Applications are due by February 8.

Faculty Award for Innovation and Leadership

Recognizes an Arts & Letters faculty member who utilizes innovative practices in the classroom, finds engaging way to integrate scholarship and teaching, and provides rich opportunities for experiential learning beyond the classroom setting. Applications are due by February 8.
